What hosting actually is

A website is a set of files. Hosting is the computer those files live on, connected to the internet so that when someone types your address, the files get sent to them. That computer needs to be fast, always switched on, secure, and near enough to your visitors that the connection is quick.

Cheap shared hosting puts hundreds of websites on one overloaded machine. When one of them gets busy, the rest slow down. You have no visibility into any of it, and support is usually a ticket queue in another timezone.

What we include

• SSL certificate. The padlock in the address bar. Browsers now warn visitors away from sites without one, and search engines prefer secure sites.
• Daily backups, kept off the server. A backup stored on the same machine as the site is not a backup. Ours are held separately so they survive a server failure.
• Security patching. Server software gets updated as fixes are released, not once a year when something breaks.
• Uptime monitoring. We are told automatically if your site stops responding, usually before any customer notices.
• A content delivery network. Copies of your site cached around the country so pages load fast wherever the visitor is.
• No control panel. You do not get login details for a system you will never use. You email us and we do it.

Why hosting affects how you rank

Search engines measure how quickly your pages load and how often your site is available. A slow or frequently down site ranks lower than an equivalent fast one. Hosting is the single biggest factor in how quickly your server responds to a request, and it is the part most small businesses never think about because it is invisible until it fails.

It also affects whether visitors stay. People abandon pages that take more than a couple of seconds to appear, and on a phone connection that threshold is unforgiving.

Moving an existing site to us

If you already have a website hosted elsewhere, moving it is usually straightforward and there is normally no downtime. We copy the site to our server, test it privately, then switch the domain over at a quiet time. You will need access to wherever your domain is registered, or the ability to ask your current provider for it.

Occasionally a site is built on something proprietary that cannot be moved — some website builders deliberately make export impossible. In that case rebuilding is the only route, which is worth knowing before you sign up with any platform.

What happens if the server goes down?

We are alerted automatically and start work immediately. Backups mean that even a total failure means restoring, not rebuilding.

Can I take my site elsewhere later?

Yes. Your domain is yours and we will provide your site files. We would rather you stayed because you want to.
