Local SEO: showing up near you

We are based in Leeds and work throughout Yorkshire, so this is the kind of search we think about most. Most small businesses do not need to rank nationally. They need to be the obvious choice within twenty miles. That is a different and much more winnable game.

Why local is different

When someone searches for a service and their location matters, search engines produce a different kind of result: a map with a handful of businesses above the normal listings. Getting into that group is driven by different factors than ordinary rankings — proximity to the searcher, how complete and active your listing is, your reviews, and how consistently your business details appear across the web.

This is good news for small businesses. You cannot outrank a national chain on a generic term, but you can absolutely beat them for people standing three streets away.

The four things that move the needle

1. A complete, active Business Profile

Every field filled, correct categories, real photographs, accurate hours including bank holidays, and posts occasionally. Dormant listings slip behind active ones.

2. Consistent details everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be written identically on every site they appear on. "Street" on one and "St" on another creates doubt about whether these are the same business. Audit the old listings you have forgotten about.

3. Reviews, steadily

Volume, recency and rating all count. A steady trickle beats forty reviews in one week, which looks manufactured. Ask consistently rather than in bursts.

4. Location content that is genuinely useful

If you serve several towns, a page for each can help — but only if each page says something real about working in that area. Twelve identical pages with the town name swapped is a recognised spam pattern and it will not work.

If you have no shop or office: service-area businesses can hide their address and specify the areas they cover instead. Do not invent an address or use a virtual office — this gets listings suspended, and recovering one is far harder than setting it up correctly.

Practical wins people miss

Measuring it

Your Business Profile reports how many people found you, whether they searched your name or a service, and how many rang or asked for directions. That last figure is the one to watch — calls and direction requests are people about to become customers.
